In the winter of 1996, a vehicle was driven to Honduras loaded with Spanish books from Mexico--it's now a functioning bookmobile. Named Wadigidigi, which in Garifuna means lightening bug, Wadigidigi rotates between four village schools near the town of Trujillo (where Columbus first set foot on the New World mainland). There are several sets of encyclopedias and reference books as well as plenty of literature for the children (these books coming from all over the world). Wadigidigi is brightly painted with pictures of children reading books while riding on the backs of flying birds and giant animals creating a mystic of new possibilities through books. To our knowledge the little Lightening Bug Bookmobile is Honduras' only mobile library, with hope we will be driving another down soon.
